Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you might want to know about StudySpell. Still stuck? See pricing or read the getting-started guide.

What is StudySpell?

StudySpell is a web app that helps kids practice spelling. Each word is read aloud, your child types what they hear, and they get instant feedback — short, low-pressure sessions built to feel more like a game than homework.

How does it work?

It's a "hear it, spell it" loop. You create or choose a word list, your child hears each word read aloud, types it, and finds out right away if they got it — with a little celebration for correct answers. Practice is short and repeatable, so it fits a normal day.

What ages and grades is StudySpell for?

It works across elementary and middle grades — roughly kindergarten through 8th grade. You can practice any word list, and each child practices at their own level, so it grows with them.

Is StudySpell free?

Yes — it's free to start, with no credit card required. A free account includes the full audio spelling test, up to 3 word lists of up to 7 words each, photo and document upload, and retry mode for missed words. Pro ($7/month) adds unlimited lists, multiple child profiles, the parent dashboard, and progress over time. See the pricing page for the full comparison.

Do I need to install anything?

No. StudySpell runs in any web browser on a phone, tablet, or computer — there's nothing to download or install. Just open it and start.

How do my child’s spelling words get into StudySpell?

Four ways: type them in, upload a photo of the word list (StudySpell reads the words for you), upload a Word or PDF document, or start from one of the ready-made starter lists.

Can more than one child use it?

Yes. With Pro, you can set up a separate profile for each child, so everyone practices at their own level and keeps their own progress, streak, and rewards.

Can my child practice on their own?

Yes. You can set up a family link so each child logs in with a simple PIN and practices independently — no need for you to run every session.

What practice modes and games are there?

Besides the core audio spelling test, there are practice games like fill-in-the-blanks and memory match, plus a free daily word puzzle to keep the habit fun. Kids also earn XP, levels, streaks, and achievements as they go.

How do rewards work?

As your child practices, they earn coins. You set up a reward store with rewards you choose — extra screen time, a treat, picking the movie — and your child trades their coins for them. You stay in control of what's on offer.

How much should my child practice?

A few focused minutes most days beats one long cram session. StudySpell is built for short, repeatable practice, so consistency is easy — even five or ten minutes a day makes a real difference.

Are there free tools I can try without signing up?

Yes. You can take a free, no-signup grade-level spelling assessment, play the daily word puzzle, generate spelling-bee words, and print spelling worksheets — all without an account.

How do I cancel Pro?

You can cancel anytime from your account, and you'll keep Pro access through the end of your billing period. There's no long-term contract.

Is my child’s information safe?

We take your family's privacy seriously and only collect what's needed to run the app. You can read the details in our Privacy Policy.
